24 for 24: Foto(ein)s in 2024

2024 has been an interesting year of personal challenge and discovery. A conclusion for the family house provided fresh impetus to inhabit (in the short term) new spaces and places to improve overall health and happiness. In Vienna, I spent a full month for the third consecutive summer. Yes, it was continent hot, but time in the Austrian capital was both glorious and productive as expected. In Calgary is a city I hadn’t visited in many decades, and I witnessed a very happy aunt surrounded by many family members on her centenary year. In California’s Bay Area is a place where I hadn’t set foot in over ten years, but whose daily temperatures and chances of consistent sun offer a higher level of content.

old fishing village Holm

In the city of Schleswig is a collection of restored houses in the historical fishing village of Holm (+54.512195, +9.575962) next to the inlet Schlei. By last light on a long late-spring day, the 7pm sun casts slivers of shadows down quiet streets and onto houses. The image seems almost frozen in time; helpful is the label “1658” on one of the houses. Photo, 28 May 2024 (P15).

Along the Ringstrasse, I’m waiting for a Bim (tram) when a dog walks by, with their human and a stroller/pram in tow. There’s no child, so the carrier is meant only for one. But everyone knows who’s in charge of that household. Photo, 5 Jul 2024 (P15).

This view of St. Anna’s church in the alpine hamlet of Wamberg is one of the many scenic motifs in the region. Some planning is required, but it’s worth the effort to reach this place, trundling through rows of cut long field-grass. Photo, 19 Jul 2024 (X70).

Apparitions 2: comet C/2023 A3

By mid-October, the brightness of the receding comet C/2023 A3 rapidly faded, but at dusk, the comet’s nucleus and tail appear in this 3-second image. The colours have been “inverted” to emphasize the comet’s appearance in the sky. I’ve labelled the comet and other stars in adjacent constellations: Her for Hercules, Oph for Ophichius, and Ser for Serpens. Photo, 17 Oct 2024 (P15).
