22 for 22: Foto(ein)s for 2022

Above/featured: Vienna skyline from Kleinwasserkraftwerk Wehr I in early morning light. Photo, 7 Jun 2022.

For 2022, the act of looking forward and backward is dominated by a 4-week stay in the city of Vienna. In between the collected images is a reclaimed longing for the Austrian capital to which I was first introduced 20 years ago, but for which there was no camera and, sadly, no recorded pixels.

I’ve already described a set of images setting the urban scenes in Vienna from 2022. Below is an additional set of 22 images selected from a period of 35 days; the time interval represents only 10% of the year, but it appears to be a personally important “watershed moment” as well.

I look back at an eventful 2021 year with 21 images with personal questions about how impending- and actual-loss affect how life proceeds beyond death, and how feelings of real belonging are different from feelings of a proper home.

20 for 20: Foto(ein)s for 2020

Above/featured: Vancouver, 22 December.

I look back at the 2020 year with the following images to address how different locations in both Seattle and Vancouver question the nature and ideas of displacement and belonging, home and travel.

Above/Featured: Vancouver Central (VPL) – 11 November.

I look back at 2019 through 19 images posted on social media, continuing a consecutive string of year-end reviews. With the following images made entirely in the metropolitan Vancouver area, a number of questions about places past and present were raised; what remained elusive were clear answers about home and belonging.

In continuing my year-end reviews over the last five consecutive years, I look back at 2018 through 18 Instagram images from two major travel events: Austria and Germany in May, and the American Southwest in October. One big change to the way I think about and carry out my photography has been the addition of a compact mirrorless fixed-prime camera, the Fujifilm X70, which I obtained in May.

Another year gone, another 34-thousand images made*

As the image above shows, I also spent a lot of time this year at the Austrian-German frontier, much of it at altitude.

Below I look back at the year 2017 with a selection of 17 images. Each picture is a direct clickable link to the corresponding post on Instagram.

15 for 15: Fotoeins’ Fotograms for 2015 (IG)

The following are 15 key Instagram posts from this past year. They’re important in light of my growing desire to give into creative impulses to produce something a little different and meaningful than serviceable shots. There’s nothing wrong with “serviceable”; on the contrary, I’m looking for something extraordinary.

Fotoeins Fotograms 14 o' 2014 cover

Fotoeins’ Fotograms: 14 for 14, in 2014 (IG)

At the end of 2013, I listed my 13 instants for the year. I continue to be fascinated by how we look at the world in square format in contrast with 4-by-3 or 3-by-2 formats. It’s not exactly the throwback to a distant past with square photographic plates, but the same physical and photographic principles regarding central symmetry apply. Here are 14 ‘fotograms’ from 2014, including a new 6D, watching my father die, and a return ‘home’ to Deutschland.
