23 for 23: Foto(ein)s in 2023

A year in review typically provides coverage spanning a period of six months or more; the period doesn’t even have to be a continuous stretch. But in this case, my highlights come solely from a period of six weeks in May and June. All else pales by comparison.
All of the images presented below have been corrected for geometric distortion and rotation, with further adjustments to image-crop, brightness, contrast, highlights, shadows, clarity, sharpness, vibrance, saturation, and colour levels. These images are as always best viewed on screens larger than a miniscule mobile.

Oh these are wonderful! Do you like the work of Jeff Wall? Happy New Year!

Hello and thanks, WOB: happy new year to you and your family!
First, I think you’ll like this story. Yes, I know his work! I first discovered Jeff Wall’s work at an exhibition in Australia at Sydney’s Museum of Contemporary Art: the physicality of the light-boxes, the size of the images, and the challenging and provocative themes in his picture-making all combined to fire something in my brain. That “something” was undefinable and wordless, but an idea that I really liked formed and sparked into life. The comedic irony is that I, born and raised in Vancouver, discovered the work of Jeff Wall, born and raised in Vancouver, halfway around the planet: a funny but timely joke on me.
Second, if there’s any resemblance to his work, then I’m guessing it’s great that my subconscious side is working well at the conscious level. My photo process goes: hey, this scene in front of me is interesting; some elements are coming together at this junction in my mind’s eye (“frame”) in what my guess is some x-seconds from now. Sometimes, this haphazard process works, and a lot of times it doesn’t. But I think that’s why a lot of photographers whom I admire all say: read books to improve word-vocabulary; look at lots of art (photo-books and big images in galleries) to improve visual literacy. Our city library has tons of photo-books, including many Jeff Wall books which I devoured after I returned home to take care of my aging parents.
Thank you again, for your time and your kind comment!

Of course, that’s how it always works—we have to go somewhere else to discover where we’re from.
I worked at a contemporary art museum for 25 years and we often exhibited Jeff Wall. I like the theatricality in his work, which is highly composed.
