From thousands of photographs over the last year, I have more than enough to highlight numerous examples of travel and urban photography. The following “instants” are selected from Instagram: my 16 for 2016.

Mountains over Indian Arm, from the Burnaby Mountain campus of Simon Fraser University.
(2) ➙ Heidelberg, 20 May
The Madonna and Child at Kornmarkt, with the Castle in the background.
The Kornmarkt or Corn Market square was once a place for the collection, sale, and exchange of farm merchandise and fresh produce. With the city fully immersed in Protestantism, the Mary column or Madonna statue was established in the early 18th-century by the Jesuits as part of a counter-reformation movement to convince the people to (re)convert to Catholicism. Many chose to leave the city to avoid the conversion. Today, the Kornmarkt Madonna is one of the most photographed landmarks in the university town of Heidelberg. From Königstuhl hill overlooking the university town and the Neckar river valley.
(4) ➙ Loreley on the Rhine river, 24 May
Next to St. Goarshausen, this sinuous stretch of the Rhine river belongs to the Oberes Mitterheintal UNESCO World Heritage site.
"Drive-by Loreley." There's no worry of hearing the sirens' call and running aground, because this is from on-board Deutsche Bahn's InterCity IC2218 train on the way north to the city of Cologne. With this view of the famous Loreley rock-cliff formation, winding back and forth against the twisting Rhine river shoreline slows the total journey some. This area is a part of the stretch between Mainz and Koblenz, known as the Oberes Mittelrheintal (Upper Middle Rhine Valley region) which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2002. Near St. Goar on the west flank of the river Rhein, Germany - 24 May 2016.

A zeppelin appears to hover over the Dom’s spires as the afternoon sun pokes through.

(8) ➙ Seattle, 10 October

(9) ➙ Dessau-Rosslau, 28 October
Former headquarters to the influential Bauhaus movement.
"Das Bauhausgebäude (the Bauhaus building)." Much of 21st-century day-to-day living owes a great deal to the Bauhaus movement in Germany and subsequently in the U.S. Designed by Martin Gropius (Bauhaus director at the time), this building housed Bauhaus after moving from Weimar in 1925. This place served as the home to architects, artists, and designers from 1925 to 1932. (10) ➙ Wittenberg, 31 October
A gentle pull to the Castle Church on the annual Reformation Day holiday.
"October 31 : Reformation Day, holiday observed in 5 eastern states." On the 499th anniversary of the Reformation, a cold foggy morning greeted residents and visitors to the "Luther town" of Wittenberg in the German state of Saxony-Anhalt. From today, various events throughout the region, state, and country began marking the quincentennial anniversary of the Reformation. Obscured in the mist stood the over 80-metre (260-feet) high tower of the Schlosskirche (Castle- or All Saints'-Church). (11) ➙ Halle (Saale), 3 November
Known for its historical salt production and present-day chocolate creations.
"The sun shines on the Händelstadt." The four towers at left (Gothic) and centre (Romanesque) are part of the Marktkirche St. Marien (St. Mary's Market Church, built 1530-1554). Martin Luther's death mask and hands (apparent molds) are located in the church. At right is the free-standing Gothic Roter Turm (Red Tower, built 1418-1506) with clock and bells. Marktplatz, Halle an der Saale, Germany - 3 Nov 2016 (SP, SaxonyAnhalt).
(12) ➙ Leipzig, 3 November
The home of Johann Sebastian Bach, a place for a devilishly good Faustian tale, and the beginning of the end for the GDR/DDR.
(13) ➙ Prague, 6 November
The Dancing House at night, accompanied by streetcars racing past.
"Dance with me." (15) ➙ Berlin, 13 November
One of the German capital’s well-known landmarks in autumn morning light.
"Spiegel (mirror)." Under the brilliant illumination of the late-autumn morning sun, the familiar bright yellow-orange colour of Berlin transit BVG's U-Bahn train appears over the red-brick Oberbaumbrücke bridge. The eastbound train is on approach to the U1 terminus station at Warschauer Strasse (out of sight at right). Berlin, Germany - 9am on 13 Nov 2016. #ichbinberliner
(16) ➙ Vancouver, 6 December
The first clear day after a fresh dump provides “frosting” for the local hills.
