21 for 21: Foto(ein)s for 2021

Above/featured: U2 train departing Berlin’s Zoologischer Garten station – 28 November 2021.

I look back at an eventful 2021 year with 21 images with personal questions about how impending- and actual-loss affect how life proceeds beyond death, and how feelings of real belonging are different from feelings of a proper home.

(17) ➙ November 21: fear

There used to be a seniors and retirement home here for Berlin’s Jewish community; a cemetery was also located out back. After evicting the home’s residents, the National Socialists cynically converted the building into a staging centre, to which other Jews from around the city were gathered for expulsion to the camps. To commemorate what happened at this location, the 1985 “Jewish Victims of Fascism” memorial sculpture by Will and Mark Lammert consists of 13 bronze female figures of different ages with expressions of fear, hunger, and desperation.

Great photos. The ‘handoff’, Patullo Bridge, and refinery are my faves. My condolences also. My mother passed away in 2021, VERY advanced age.

Thanks, John. I’m sorry about your mother. Despite our own “advancement” in age, we’ll always be babies in our parents’ eyes, even at the end when we are their caretakers (“parents” to our parents). All the best to you and your family in 2022.

Thank you for your kind comment and for stopping by. Yes, I managed to squeeze a short trip home to Berlin which did wonders for my mental health. One day, I would like to visit India, and to see a cricket match live and in-person: doesn’t matter if it’s T20, ODI, or Test. All the best to you and your family in 2022.

Thanks, Eva, for stopping by. There are still a number of “photo automats” around Berlin. They’re a little beat up, but fortunately, they’re not heavily vandalized (as far as I understand). The “photo automat” in my post is usually in the basement of the C/O Berlin gallery, but in the case of this particular photo, artist Peter Miller used the photo-automat for his exhibition on the 2nd-floor. All the best to you and your family in 2022.
