24T57 Gasser’s figures and forms in Vienna

E56 V23

In Vienna, Austrian artist Hans Gasser (also, Hanns Gasser: 1817-1868) created a variety of sculptures which are clearly visible and easily found by visitor and resident alike, if they know where to look and what they’re looking. Here are some examples:

  • HGM: 8 statues above main entrance
  • Palais Ferstel: 12 statues above Café Central
  • Stadtpark: Little Danube fountain
  • Votivkirche: exterior, above main portal
  • Westbahnhof: Sisi statue
  • Wien Museum Karlsplatz: “Little Danube” statue

Palais Ferstel (1.)

I wrote previously about the legacy of one of the Vienna Ringstraße architects Heinrich Ferstel. Hans Gasser’s statues appear on one of Ferstel’s well-known “palaces” in the inner city.

Above Café Central (former home of the Austro-Hungarian Bank) are 12 statues completed by Gasser in 1855; each statue represents a “nation” within the greater Habsburg empire. Photo, 30 June 2024.

Westbahnhof (15.)

Marble statue of Empress Elisabeth (also known as “Sisi”), by Gasser in 1860. The former train station at this location was named after Empress Elisabeth. Photo, 22 June 2024.

Wien Museum Karlsplatz (4.)

Donauweibchen (“Little Danube”) statue, by Gasser, in the museum’s permanent collection This small marble figure completed in 1862 was the model for the 1865 Donauweibchen water fountain in Stadtpark (see above). Photo, 28 June 2024.

I made all photos with an iPhone15 in June and July 2024. This post composed with Jetpack for iOS appears on Fotoeins Fotografie at fotoeins DOT com.
