The Nature of Living Things (LAPC)

Above/featured: A warm summer afternoon on Grouse Mountain: North Vancouver, BC – 1 August 2016 (450D).

It’s a play on the title of a long-running documentary series on science and technology: “The Nature of Things” airs on Canada’s national broadcaster, the CBC. “Nature” can mean different things to different people, but I’ve three words in mind: flora, fauna, and mountains. Having begun photography as an active interest relatively late from 2005, it’s been a wondrous journey of non-stop discovery. Between 2007 and 2018, the following locations provided backdrops and venues to photographs about “nature.”

  • Argentina: Buenos Aires
  • Australia: Kangaroo Island, SA
  • Australia: Rottnest Island, WA
  • Austria: Alpbach
  • Canada: North Vancouver, BC
  • Canada: Vancouver, BC
  • Chile: Región de Coquimbo
  • Germany: Karlsruhe
  • Germany: Kassel
  • New Zealand: Akaroa
  • New Zealand: Homer Tunnel
  • South Africa: Cape Town
  • USA: Mount Vernon, WA
  • USA: Point Reyes National Seashore, CA
  • USA: Tucson, AZ

Landscapes of Aotearoa (LAPC)

Featured: Aotearoa: “land of the long white cloud.” Marlborough Region from Cook Strait: photo by Krzysztof Golik, Wiki CC4.

  • Landscape (noun), definition: visible features of an area of land, often considered in terms of aesthetic appeal.
  • Māori: “mano whenua“, heartland or interior of the country
  • Chinese: 景色
  • German: die Landschaft
  • Spanish: el paisaje

As part of my year-long around-the-world journey in 2012, I spent most of July in New Zealand (Aotearoa). The following 12 landscape images provide another perspective about how I feel about non-urban settings. I’ve had some say about urban cityscapes, but I’ll be the person to stop every few kilometres for every possible vista. The following images from the North Island (Te Ika a Māui) and South Island (Te Waipounamu) are reminders of my desire to return to Aotearoa.

  1. Wellington Harbour (Te Whanganui a Tara)
  2. Cook Strait (Te Moana Raukawa)
  3. East coast, near Kaikoura
  4. Akaroa
  5. Bealey, Canterbury region
  6. Franz Josef Glacier (Kā Roimata o Hine Hukatere)
  7. Fox Glacier (Te Moeka o Tuawe)
  8. Lake Matheson (Te Ara Kairaumati)
  9. Southern Alps (Kā Tiritiri o te Moana)
  10. Aoraki and Horokoau
  11. Queenstown (Tāhuna)
  12. Milford Sound (Piopiotahi)

New Zealand’s national day, Waitangi Day, is observed annually on 6 February.

Quarry Bay, Hong Kong

Cityscapes (LAPC)

Featured: East on King’s Road, Quarry Bay, Hong Kong – 8 June 2012 (450D).

  • Definition: visual appearance of a city or urban area; a city landscape; a picture of a city.
  • Chinese: 城市景色
  • German: das Stadtbild
  • Spanish: el paisaje urbano

Over a ten-year timescale, glimpses of the following ten cities from around the world provide some perspective about the way I consider urban settings. Fact is compared to all-natural settings, I’m most comfortable inside the city: the larger the place, the better I can remain anonymous and observe. For the present purpose, I stayed away from the tried-and-true wide-angle shot, and went tighter with medium- or long-zoom glass.

  1. Bratislava, Slovakia
  2. Cambridge, England
  3. Copenhagen, Denmark
  4. Heidelberg, Germany
  5. Hong Kong, (SAR) China
  6. Lyon, France
  7. Seattle, USA
  8. Sydney, Australia
  9. Toronto, Canada
  10. Vienna, Austria

Magical light, sorcerers’ delight (LAPC)

Above/featured: Cross of the Third Millennium in Coquimbo: from La Serena, Chile – 7 May 2011 (450D).

Time has been kind, and I’ve been lucky to witness many displays of light and colour, and how both have combined to produce a visual brand of magic, by day and at night, at altitude and at sea-level. Sometimes it’s easy to catch the magic, but at other times, I’m forced onto active watch to get those special moments. That might well be work towards photographic sorcery.

I made all photos below between 2007 and 2018 with the following: A510 for the Canon Powershot A510, 450D for Canon 450D, C6D for Canon 6D, and X70 for Fujifilm X70; alle Fotoaufnahmen sind mit Wasserzeichen versehen worden. My Berlin: 24 bumper tracks in the capital

Above/featured: Siegessäule & Grosse Stern, at night – 13 Nov 2012 (HL).

I compiled a list of songs accompanying my travel, a soundtrack that’s full of meaning and memories. This is another set, a listing of 24 tracks I associate with the capital city of Germany. Music is always about personal selection, and every track fires a specific memory of time and place within Berlin. For example, watching “Lola rennt” (Run Lola Run) in a movie theatre in Toronto in the fall of 1998 planted the seeds for a move to Germany three years later. My first visit to Berlin soon after marked the beginning of my love affair with the “grand lady.”
