Fotoeins Friday: February Fosanacht, group gathering

(26 February 2017.)

It’s a winter weekend afternoon, and despite the lack of precipitation, those gathered outside gravitate to huts and shacks offering drinks and snacks; note how some are dressed in costume. (I’m almost feeling nostalgic for pre-pandemic gatherings.)

In 2021, Carnival season in southern Germany, known as Fasching / Fosanacht / Maschkera, will occur in February. Key dates include Weiberfastnacht/Unsinnige Donnerstag (crazy Thursday) on 11 February, Fastnachtssonntag (Carnival Sunday) on 14 February, Rosenmontag (Shrove Monday) on 15 February, and Aschermittwoch (Ash Wednesday) on 17 February.

I made this photo on 26 February 2017 with the Canon EOS6D mark1, 24-105 glass, and the following settings: 1/500-sec, f/14, ISO5000, and 105mm focal length. This post appears on Fotoeins Fotografie at fotoeins DOT com as https://wp.me/p1BIdT-jmC.

Fotoeins Friday: February Fosanacht, bike race

(26 February 2017.)

To kick off the season’s festivities, a costumed bike race goes through Partenkirchen; the race has a lot to do with the best costumes and best decorated bicycles.

(26 February 2017.)

Crowds line Ludwigstrasse in Partenkirchen, ready to watch the costumed bike race through town to kick off the season’s festivities. Meanwhile, the guy with blue costume and blue sneakers takes a call.

One is in costume, the other is in uniform. Deciding which is which is an exercise for the reader.

Fotoeins Friday in Oberammergau: Pilate House

In this month’s series, I portray images of some of the “Lüftlmalerei” (house murals) in the Bavarian alpine town of Oberammergau, 21 km northwest from Garmisch-Partenkirchen.

A mural of Pilate and Christ appears on the south side of Pilate House at Ludwig-Thoma-Strasse 10.

I made the image above on 29 May 2018 with a Fujifilm X70 fixed-lens prime and the following settings: 1/500-sec, f/11, ISO1000, and 18.5mm focal length (28mm full-frame equivalent). This post appears on Fotoeins Fotografie at fotoeins DOT com as https://wp.me/p1BIdT-i8r.

In this month’s series, I portray images of some of the “Lüftlmalerei” (house murals) in the Bavarian alpine town of Oberammergau, 21 km northwest from Garmisch-Partenkirchen.

The story of Hansel and Gretel is painted at the children’s home at Ettaler Strasse 41. The painted mural is visible from the street, as I wasn’t interested in entering the private property without permission. The Hansel and Gretel story was first published in German by the Grimm Brothers in 1812 in their compilation “Kinder- und Hausmärchen” (Children’s and Household Tales).

Fotoeins Friday in Berchtesgadener Land: Kehlstein north

About 10 kilometres southeast from the alpine town of Berchtesgaden, the infamous Eagle’s Nest on Kehlstein is also a destination for those interested in all-encompassing views of the Berchtesgaden Alps (Berchtesgadener Alpen) from the southeast corner of Germany into central Austria. ⁣⁣I described the view south last week.

Shown above is a view north includes the Documentation Centre Obersalzberg (which explains how the Nazis’ claimed Obersalzberg for their own and the construction of the Eagle’s Nest on Kehlstein mountain), Untersberg mountain in the distance at the Austro-German border, and the Austrian cities of Hallein and Salzburg along the Salzach river. Also visible are roads connecting Salzburg and Hallein with Berchtesgaden. This wedge of land was once busy and rich with activities for the “white gold”: there were salt mines (e.g., in Berchtesgaden and Hallein), salt barge transports on the Salzach river, and the sale and exchange of salt for goods.
