Fotoeins Friday, Helgoland: Helgoländer Felssockel marine reserve

It’s overcast with light “mizzle” (mist-drizzle), but the winds are relatively light and the water chop reasonable. Not only are these are the waters of the North Sea just off Helgoland island, but this is also the Helgoländer Felssockel marine nature reserve, designated and established in 1981. The reserve does not include Helgoland nor the Düne islet. In the background at centre are the two tall remaining rock formations: “Kurze Anna” (Little Anna) and “Lange Anna” (Tall Anna).

Fotoeins Friday, Helgoland: nesting northern gannets

It’s bird season! But this is definitely not hunting with guns, but rather, a photographic hunt of the wild mass of noisy smelly birds. Pictured here is a small sampling of thousands of northern gannets nesting on their little mounds, each with at least an egg, hatchling, or in this case, a chick as indicated by an arrow.

Fotoeins Friday, Helgoland: morning rainbow on the wharf

Formerly used as fisherman and lobster shacks, the brightly coloured huts which greet ferry passengers upon arrival are used as galleries, little cafes and restaurants, and community space. The little houses are a fine sight in the early-summer morning sun.

Fotoeins Friday, Helgoland: dawn light over Düne

I can hear the faint gentle lapping of the ocean against the shoreline outside my apartment window on Helgoland. But it’s the steady alarm that pushes me out of bed to catch the early light of day in late-May. For my time on a chunk of rock in the middle of the North Sea, I’m very satisfied, as oranges and purples hang over the silhouette of Düne island in the distance.

24T18 Heligoland from the sea

E17

I wrote yesterday about some 1st impressions about a red rock and sandy islet in the North Sea. With some time before the return ferry to Hamburg in the afternoon, I purchased a trip on a little boat to go around the island of Heligoland.

Around the northwest corner of Heligoland, with Düne in the background at left.
Weathered sandstone rock pillars “Lange Anna” (left) and “Kurze Anna” (right-centre).
Heading around the southeast corner: overcast, misty, low chop, light rain showers.
Into the inner harbour, with the bright colours of the former lobster shacks (Hummerbuden).
“To be blue” in German means “to be drunk.” Drunk in blue and colours, definitely.
Museum Helgoland: the flag for Helgoland consists of 3 horizontal stripes: from top-down, respectively, green for the land, red for the sandstone cliffs, and white for the white sand.
Museum Heligoland: Why does the “Lange Anna” sandstone-pillar look like a happy carrot?
