Fotoeins Friday: the other greener side, (East) Berlin

20 October 2012.

“The grass is greener on the other side.”

In this case, if you like making old things new, if you believe in the power of gentrification, then we’ve got something for you, especially in the German capital city. But for those who would like to keep things simpler but not necessarily keep things old, there’s a look or peek into nirvana, something like the well-visited well-populated East Side Gallery, where on the other side it’s a place most visitors won’t know or go. If you live here, if you’ve spent any significant time here, or if you’ve been to this city countless times, it’s easy to find spots where the resident-to-visitor ratio is in favour of the former. And well, I came here to this spot and it seemed like a perfectly symbolic way to begin my period of two months in the city.

Ultimately though, in a city where English is the second de facto “lingua franca”, who can truly tell the difference?

During my year-long RTW, I made this photo on 20 October 2012 with the Canon 450D, 18-55 kit-lens, and the following settings: 1/400-sec, f/5, ISO200, and 23mm focal length (37mm full-frame equivalent). This post appears on Fotoeins Fotografie at as

Booze Bar Berlin, Friedrichshain, Berlin, Germany,

My Berlin: get your drink on at Booze Bar

My friend, Anna, really likes this bar in her neighbourhood. I’m quietly skeptical that any bar is really that good, but I’m game for a drink tonight, and more importantly, I’m polite. The sign greeting us at the entrance is a simple hand-written sign.

“No Shisha, no HappyHour, no Shit: betreutes Trinken …”

“Betreut” has multiple definitions, including “curated”, “maintained”, or “looked after.” I (choose to) interpret the phrase “betreutes Trinken” as “customers will not be served shitty drinks.”

Booze Bar Berlin is already my kind of place.

Cupcake Berlin, Friedrichshain), Berlin, Germany - 13 Nov 2012,

Fotoeins Friday: Cupcake Berlin

I’ve just finished brunch with a couple of friends in the East Berlin neighbourhood of Freidrichshain. I wander with only a general direction in mind; I’m familiar with this part of the city, but I don’t have specific knowledge about the streets. I make a left, go forward a block or two, and that tiny street looks interesting, so I make a right. One turn here, and another turn there, and there’s no telling what one will see or miss. With colours grabbing my eyeballs to hold still, this mural appears on the corrugated metal protection barrier at the entrance to Cupcake, claiming the city’s first cupcake shop since 2007.

I made the photo above on 13 November 2012 with the Canon EOS450D (XSi) camera, EF-S 18-55 II zoom-lens, and the following settings: 1/30s, f/5.6, ISO400, and 18mm focal length (29mm full-frame equivalent). This post appears on Fotoeins Fotopress at as
