Berlin Gleisdreieck: winter vs. summer

Gleisdreieck (“railway triangle”, “triangular junction”) is a U-Bahn train- and junction-station at the western end of the Kreuzberg district in the German capital city of Berlin.

The station has both upper-level and lower-level platforms serving lines U1 and U2, respectively, although both sets of track are raised above ground. At Gleisdreieck, the U1 line runs west-east, whereas the U2 line runs perpendicularly and temporarily “north-south”.

The shape of things to see and spot

Come here early enough, and it’s just a few early risers, dedicated runners, and well, me. There’s plenty of space to move around and change the angle of how I’m seeing things. Sure enough, there’s a bright circular halo surrounding the famous St. John of Nepomuk statue. With the rising sun in the background, the back-lit view has other bridge fixtures, some buildings, and the tall sharp dual spires of the Church of Our Lady Before Týn in silhouette. “Shape” is a noun whose meaning is synonymous with:

form, appearance, configuration, formation, structure; figure, build, physique, body; contours, lines, outline, silhouette, profile.

It is one of the many “pieces” of good photography, and when the separate pieces come together, there’s something beautiful to behold, even perhaps, thought-provoking and inspiring.

I’m not going to pretend my photographs are absolute “championship” quality, but I know and understand my photographs are often worth a good long look. Here is a small selection of shapes I’ve seen from around the world with my trusty Canon EOS450D (XSi) camera (which has since given way to the 6D).

Navigating Melbourne’s lanes for street art

In an earlier post, I’ve shown some work on display as street art in Adelaide in South Australia.

Over a period of four days in Melbourne, I wandered through lanes and streets to look for some representative street art in the Victorian state capital, some works which spoke of the people who live there. Would it be the same kind of art and/or messages I’d seen earlier in Adelaide? As always, the set of artists and their respective work hold unique value in each of the cities.

Sydney: happy 52 to the Opera House (2025)

Standing prominently above Sydney’s Bennelong Point, the white shelled structure serves as an icon for city and country.

The Sydney Opera House is made up of three groups of interlocking “vaulted shells” housing two primary concert auditorium spaces. The shell-like structures sit upon a large platform, encompassed on the outside by stepped terraces as staging or assembly areas for visitors.

On 20 October 1973, Queen Elizabeth II formally opened The Opera House. In the decades since, the building has become an icon for city and country. The building endures as a “landmark” and “ambassador” for both city and country. Immediately telling are the roof’s white shells, looking like wind-blown sails at a distance in the harbour.

My Prague: 5 Spots for Night Photos

Prague is very attractive by day, but the Czech capital city is also beautiful at night.

By day, visitors are out and about, moving from one attraction to another. At night, sounds from pub crawls and pre-wedding parties seem to fill the air.

A closer look reveals a romantic side to the city with silent streets and half-empty plazas. A yellow glow settles like a warm and welcoming halo, softening the sharp lines of centuries-old architecture, and smoothing over cobbled stones embedded in old neighbourhood streets.

It’s easy to forget a significant part of central Prague is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, but the following five locations to view the city at night provide great reminders. Don’t ignore the illuminated city after dark, which is still very safe, and don’t forget to bring your camera when journeying out at night.
