My Cologne: wandering the streets in Ehrenfeld
For many, the German city of Cologne brings to mind the Cathedral, Karneval, and perfumed water.
For me, Cologne brings to mind great friends, tasty Turkish nibbles, football side 1. FC Köln, and Ehrenfeld.
My friend Y wanted to test her new camera on the streets, and when she suggested the Ehrenfeld neighbourhood, I readily agreed. My many visits to this city on the Rhine have frequently ended up in Ehrenfeld that’s largely Turkish and working class, an immigrant blue-collar area with which I readily identify and it’s why Ehrenfeld is my K-‘hood.

Underground tram station U-Bahnhof Piusstrasse.

Stencil by kurznachzehn. Oebel Café-Bäckerei, Venloer Strasse.

Simit Sarayi (bagel palace), Venloer Strasse.

Nur das Rote (only red).

Ehrenfeldgürtel (Ehrenfeld belt road) from Venloer Strasse, north towards Ehrenfeld station.

“Holzkohlegrill Spezialitäten” in German, “Kömürde Izgara” in Turkish, (lamb and vegetable) specialties grilled over charcoal.

Two Kölners, in front of a mural by mittenimwald in Heliosstrasse. (For CityLeaks Festival: here and here.)

There’s a landlocked light(house) that never goes out. Heliosstrasse at Vogelsanger Strasse.

Bitte warten (please wait): Venloer Strasse at Ehrenfeldgürtel.

Guck guck! (Look look!).

Some change.

Light charm.
I made all images above on 24 May 2016 with a Canon EOS6D mark1; some of the places pictured above no longer exist. Loved your post and images, Henry, I have been in Koeln some 40 years ago visiting a friend there. I remember that amazing and famous Art Museum in downtown, can’t remember it’s name right now.

Hi and thanks, Cornelia. I’m certain Köln has changed “somewhat” since your last visit 😉 hope you can return there soon! Next to the city’ Cathedral are the Museum Ludwig (which is a fantastic art museum) and the Römisches-Germanisches (Roman-German) Museum.

You brought the city to life for us Henry – loved the red car in front of the red shop! And why is there a land-locked lightouse??? Have never seen anything like that before!

Hi and thanks, Tina!
The red car in front of the red fashion shop was a beautiful superposition by complete chance, which begged to be imaged. A great talking point for people in Köln-Ehrenfeld, the landlocked lighthouse is a construction by the parent Helios company as a testbed and was never meant to be operational as an actual lighthouse; I wrote about the lighthouse in a separate post.

Enjoyed your photo walk. Love the colorful street, especially the red car infront of the shop. All are beautifully captured. The last two street shots are my favorite. Thank you, Henry for taking us there.

Hi and thanks, Amy!
That red car in front of the red fashion shop was a beautiful accidental superposition, begging to be imaged. I’m also fond of the images of the people, as you’ve rightly indicated.
