I’m happy to be inside the Czech capital of Prague whenever the opportunity arises. With great timing of an early-October visit and a very positive weather forecast, I’m awake well before scheduled sunrise, and I stumble out to Karlův most (Charles Bridge) to catch the light of sunrise on the city. Seeing and photographing the warm sunrise glow on the old parts of the city makes the early wakeup call worthwhile. Prague is effectively an “open-air museum”; the warm colours at sunrise combined with the changing colours of the surrounding deciduous canopy magnify the visual intensity.
And no, I don’t think there’s enough orange or red to cover this UNESCO World Heritage Site …

Pražský hrad (Prague Castle), above the Little Quarter.

Hergetova Cihelna (Hergetov’s brickyard) and Kafka Museum, in the Little Quarter.

Museum Kampa on Kampa Island, and Hladová zeď (Hunger wall) on Petřín hill.

Lichtenštejnský palác (Liechtenstein Palace) on Kampa, and Petřín Tower on the top of Petřín hill.

Sv. Antonín Paduánský (St. Anthony of Padua) statue on Charles Bridge; original statue from 1707.

St. Vincent of Ferrara (foreground) and St. Procope (with staff, partly hidden); Strahov Monastery in the background at left.

Chram sv. Mikulase, Malostranská mostecká věž (St. Nicholas Cathedral, Little Quarter Bridge Tower).

Southeast morning sun, and the stars of St. John of Nepomuk.

Lichtenštejnský palác, Na Kampě (Liechtenstein Palace, Kampa Island).

9am light on the Little Quarter, from Liechtenstein Palace (left) to Prague Castle and Charles Bridge (right).
I made the photos above on the mornings of 7 October 2009 and 8 November 2016. This post appears on Fotoeins Fotografie at fotoeins DOT com as http://wp.me/p1BIdT-13s.

Great photos! Would love to get over to Europe some time. My church actually goes over there each year to teach English, but I haven’t gone on the trip yet. Maybe one day!

Hi! I agree – Prague is great city to visit. When I saw the possibility of a clear morning, I made sure to get up early. I’d say I was fortunate to have been able to make these photographs, too. Thanks for dropping by!

Color temperature just a tad to high? No?

Hi, Iva. Even with minor adjustments to brightness and contrast, the vibrancy of the colours seen here are true. Thanks for reading!

Hi, Laurel.
I was very fortunate first to have been around for this fall sunrise; second that the colours were unbelievably deep, so much orange, yellow, and read; and third that I even managed to capture and photograph a small sampling of the light and colour for a short period of time … until the sun got too “high” in the sky!

Hi, Lindsay. Thanks for your very kind comments!
A Christmas/Advent or simply a new year’s calendar is a great idea. I’d even pursue it, if I wasn’t getting ready to pack and ship my belongings from Chile to Vancouver, and if I wasn’t planning and about to start my year of travel. 🙂
Thanks again for stopping by!

Hi, Jade.
The colours were incredible that October morning, and I felt very fortunate to have seen and made a photograph of the fall scene. The city itself is beautiful, but with that morning light and the changing of the colours, the combination verged on magical. What was even better – Charles Bridge was almost empty of tourists and pedestrians at the early hour.

Hi, Lola. I’ve been to Prague a lot over the last five years, but what’s really cool is that when I feared I’d get bored after the eighth, ninth, or tenth visit, I always found something new in Praha which would blow my mind. I’d ask myself: how didn’t I see this before? There really is a *lot* to see and experience in Praha on both sides of the Vltava river. I’m really excited for you and Leah, and I wish I could visit Praha with y’all. 🙂 Thanks again for your comment!

[…] There’s a reason why it’s called “the golden hour”, the time after sunrise when early-morning light covers everything in a warm glow. Looking up the sunrise time for Prague in early October, I arrived at Charles Bridge in time for the morning “fireworks”, as Petřín hill already dressed with leaves’ changing colours would slowly light up in the morning fire. Few were on the bridge at 730am; more trickled in over time, and by 9, the bridge was full of people. I wrote about “The colours of fall in Prague” in a post here. […]

I am from Czech Rep. and Prague is my hart – city even though I leave for last 32 years in Montreal.
Every year I have to see it, be there and every time I still find something what I never saw before.
I was working in hospital in Prague for 4 years before I moved to Canada ( idiots communist still there at that time )
but I never saw Prague so detailed and so deep in my hart as I left country, only then I always cry when I see it again.
Kafka’s words – Prague is dangerous mother – she grabs you with her” long fingers” by hart and never let’s you go!!!!
And she really does just that
I love your input and those pictures are real and they are spectacular – I saw it many many times exactly how You captured them
Thank You
