Christmas in July (12 of 14), Bielefeld

Alter Markt, Bielefeld, Germany – 22 December 2010.

I visited my friends in Bielefeld, where I was met with not just a mere flurry, but heavy snowfall. This was the kind of snowfall which let you know in no uncertain terms it was sticking around for awhile. There was heavy snow when I arrived the first day, heavy snowfall within the city the following day, and more heavy snow to mark my departure from the city the day after.

Snow and sparkly colour-lights made for a good combination; snowfall magically let up at night when I made these photographs of the Christmas market in the centre of town. Adding copious amounts of Glühwein led to a journey of Christmas bliss … as far as I can remember.

Christmas in July (11 of 14), Hamburg

Hamburg, Germany – 21 December 2010.

All of the night shots taken in this Christmas series were obtained without a tripod of any shape or size. Instead, my three-year old entry-level digital camera was propped and steadied against a biped – that biped would be me. The other allowance I made was using a lens with a wide open maximum aperture. While the 1.6-times crop factor on my camera has been an issue at times, I’ve simply done what others have suggested – move my feet, and walk in or out until I saw what I wanted to photograph. I’ve thoroughly enjoyed using the 50mm f/1.4 lens.

“The sparkly and the bokeh”

Just two days before closing and four days before Christmas, the Christmas market in central Hamburg at Rathausmarkt (City Hall Square) was in full swing, with lights, decorations, Glühwein, food, and above all, people of all ages.

As I walked around the square, making a photo of this and making a photo of that, I found myself under the very tall Christmas light-tree (Lichtbaum), where I stood, transfixed by the colourful lights …

Just two days before closing and four days before Christmas, the Christmas market in central Hamburg at Rathausmarkt (City Hall Square) was in full swing, with lights, decorations, Glühwein, food, and above all, people of all ages. For me, I passed on the Glühwein (for once!), and took my time instead to make a few frames around the market.
