Fotoeins Friday: Red banner, good capital (Berlin)

At Berlin central station, banners hang in the entrance hall to advertise products and services with the promise of the highest quality. The red and the “S” represent the colour and symbol for the Sparkasse brand of savings banks in Germany. I waited until a person dressed in a similar red ascended the escalator to walk underneath the banner (in projection).

I made the above photograph on 8 May 2015 with the Canon EOS6D, 24-105 zoom-lens, and the following settings: 1/125-sec, f/8, ISO1000, and 47mm focal length. This post appears on Fotoeins Fotografie at fotoeins.com as http://wp.me/p1BIdT-7PD.

Fotoeins Friday: Track 14B, Berlin Hauptbahnhof

“Mmmmmm, interference fringes …”

Even at 7pm, it’s unusual to see a lack of people in Berlin’s central train station, even at the very northwest corner of the second floor (above ground; 2. OG). The two remaining tracks to the left are 15 and 16, used solely by east-west S-Bahn trains on the city’s “Stadtbahn.”

I made the photo above on 2 May 2015 with the Canon EOS6D, 24-105 L zoom-lens, and the following settings: 1/160s, f/11, ISO500, 24mm focal-length. This post appears on Fotoeins Fotopress at fotoeins.com as http://wp.me/p1BIdT-8Af.

Happy holidays 2015 from Berlin, and the best wishes for 2016!

I made the photo above at the south entrance to Berlin Hauptbahnhof at Washingtonplatz on 27 November 2014 with the Canon EOS6D camera, EF 24-105 L zoom-lens, and the following settings: 1/40s, f/4, ISO4000, and 24mm focal length. My Berlin: intentions and (e)motions

I’ve always loved train stations, and Berlin Hauptbahnhof (main train station) is no exception as these Instagram shots show.

When I’m in Berlin, I go out of the way to spend extra time at the train station to watch people, to observe the flow of people in and out of trains and in and out of the train station. Trains enter and leave, passengers do the same in perpendicular fashion. Individual moments of people on their way are combined with sweeping motions to provide a novel form of urban landscape that’s common to all urban train stations, but with indicators unique to the German capital city.

Instants in tempo: Berlin Hauptbahnhof

I love Berlin, and I love train stations.

These two preoccupations always converge at the Berlin Hauptbahnhof (central train station). Looming overhead is the large glass roof, like the temple of transport hanging over scurrying passengers; trains pass overhead as the shops reside below; tempting scents from baked goods and grilled bratwurst waft from neighbouring stands; calm measured station announcements and excited conversations in the air is punctuated by screeching brakes of trains entering the station.
