Fotoeins Friday: winter scenes, nine (Südallgäu)

(8 March 2017.)

After spending most of the day at the nearby Fellhorn summit, I return to the alpine town of Oberstdorf in time before skies get dark quick. What’s appealing are the white-layered fields with a sprinkling of farms, huts, and houses. In the image above, the view above faces south across those very fields into the head of the Stillach river valley; a snow-covered ridge of mountains in the background is about 14 kilometres away along the Germany-Austria border.

Fotoeins Friday: winter scenes, eight (Fellhorn)

I’m standing on the Germany-Austria border after having hopped off the Fellhorn cable car at its mountain station (elevation 1967 metres / 6453 feet). The skies have cleared just enough for a commanding view of the surrounding Allgäu Alps and Austria’s Kleinwalsertal valley below. In this image facing southwest are Möserbahn Bergstation at centre-right and Kanzelwandbahn Bergstation at upper right, above which is the peak Grosse Widderstein. Clusters of alpine skiers are visible as groups and lines of black dots on white snow.

Fotoeins Friday: winter scenes, seven (Höfatsblick)

As part of the Nebelhorn cable car adjacent to the town of Oberstdorf, Höfatsblick station is one of two “mid-level” stations between base and mountain stations. But even at an elevation of 1932 metres (6339 feet), plenty of snow is found at Höfatsblick, and ski runs starting from higher up continue on down. With a lone skier in the lower-half of the image; this southwest view reaches out to mountains along the Austria-Germany border region (including Hohes Licht and Biberkopf) and beyond.

Fotoeins Friday in Kleinwalsertal: Riezlern

Austria’s Kleinwalsertal (Little Walser Valley) is a picturesque mountain valley southeast from Oberstdorf. This piece of Austria’s Vorarlberg is cut off from the rest of the federal state and country; so, the only way in by car or bus is through the town of Oberstdorf in southern Germany.

Riezlern is the gateway town into the Kleinwalsertal with an abundant number of summer hiking and winter skiing activities, with access not only to Kanzelwand (and across the border to Fellhorn), but also over a dozen lifts in the valley. In the image above, passengers wait under cover at bus stop “Riezlern Post” with the mountains behind defining the frontier between Austria and Germany.

Austria’s Kleinwalsertal (Little Walser Valley) is a picturesque mountain valley southeast from Oberstdorf. This piece of Austria’s Vorarlberg is cut off from the rest of the federal state and country; so, the only way in by car or bus is through the town of Oberstdorf in southern Germany.

In the town of Hirschegg, the modern glass and steel building for the Walserhaus is home to the region’s information centre for Kleinwalsertal Tourism, a community library, the “Bergschau” exhibition about the local geography and geology, and a historical collection of skiing paraphernalia.

Austria’s Kleinwalsertal (Little Walser Valley) is a picturesque mountain valley southeast from Oberstdorf. This piece of Austria’s Vorarlberg is cut off from the rest of the federal state and country; so, the only way in by car or bus is through the town of Oberstdorf in southern Germany.

At the foot of Wannenberg mountain, the hamlet of Baad anchors the end of the Kleinwalsertal and marks the end of the Kleinwalserstrasse road (Landestrasse 201). Alpine rainshowers aren’t as fun as snowshowers, and I wisely step inside the nearby cafe for warmth and a late-morning snack.

Austria’s Kleinwalsertal (Little Walser Valley) is a picturesque mountain valley southeast from Oberstdorf. This piece of Austria’s Vorarlberg is cut off from the rest of the federal state and country; so, the only way in by car or bus is through the town of Oberstdorf in southern Germany.

At the local bus stop “Mittelberg Ort” in front of the Hotel Alte Krone, this morning view at the back of the hotel faces south-southeast into the fog, mist, and rain; all of which hints at the transition from winter to spring. From a “geo” standpoint, you’re looking at the Breitach valley with Zwölferkopf at left and Barenkopf at right.

Fotoeins Friday: winter play at Fellhorn (Bayern 100)

Upon arrival in town, the signs in and around Oberstdorf will tell you you’re in a special place regardless of the season. If it’s green in summer, there are countless hikes down in the valleys and up on the peaks. If it’s white in winter, skiiers and `boarders are everywhere with their fiberglass “sticks and boards”. Among the Allgäu Alps is Fellhorn which hugs the German-Austrian border at an elevation of 2038 metres (6686 feet). If you’re lucky to find yourself plowing or “flying” through fresh powder, remind yourself you’re playing oh so freely in between two independent nations.

RVA regional bus 9762 (or line 7) provides service between Oberstdorf and the Fellhorn cable car (Fellhornbahn) lower or valley station.

Fotoeins Friday: over the edge at Nebelhorn (Bayern 100)

I don’t ski nor do I (snow)board; I have my ankles and knees to thank for that. However, any perspective whether it’s personal or geometrical deserves recognition.

At Höfatsblick (1932 metres / 6339 feet) under the Nebelhorn summit, there’s a restaurant and many are lying out on deck chairs getting their sun on. These two skiers seem to linger at the edge of a downhill slope with the Allgäu Alps looming in the distance beyond. Timing is everything, and I press the shutter button as one remains still while the other proceeds downhill.

November 2018 is the 100th anniversary for the declaration of Bavaria as “free state” (Freistaat). Fotoeins Friday: winter activity on Nebelhorn (Bayern 100)

Above the Bavarian mountain town of Oberstdorf among the Allgäu Alps is Nebelhorn mountain. Skiing, snowboarding, hang gliding are available on the mountain summit (2224 metres / 7297 feet), as well as additional snow runs near the cable car’s two intermediary stations.

The view shown faces southwest with the “flat slanted ridge” structure called Hoher Ifen in the background at centre. Oberstdorf is prominent as the southern most town in Germany, is host to a large ski jump and European championship-grade skating facilities, and is also home to various German athletes who have participated at recent Winter Olympic Games.
