Fotoeins Friday: Handmade wares at Munich’s Schwabing Christmas Market

Outside of Munich’s city centre crowds diminish and it’s no different around Münchner Freiheit. When I’m in town meeting friends, the area is complete with cafés, pubs, bistros, and restaurants. The square is also home to the neighbourhood’s Christmas market, which for area residents is a relaxed and quieter alternative. Various stalls ply food, drink, and handcrafted items of various shapes and sizes.

With MVV public transport, the Schwabing Christmas market at Münchner Freiheit is accessible with the U3 or U6 subway (underground) lines in about 15 to 20 minutes from the city centre to station Münchner Freiheit. Eichenau and Pasing are respectively 25 and 12 km west of Munich’s city centre, each accessible with S-Bahn trains.

I made the photo above on 10 December 2012 with the Canon EOS450D (XSi), EF-S 18-55 IS II zoom-lens, and the following settings: 1/30s, f/3.5, ISO800, and 18mm focal length (29mm full-frame equivalent). This post appears on Fotoeins Fotopress at fotoeins.com as http://wp.me/p1BIdT-7kp.

Fotoeins Friday: Christmas stars in Koblenz

I’m on a 4-week 13-city cross-country tour throughout Germany, and beyond the hectic schedule, I’m definitely taking time to enjoy this opening week of the Christmas market in Koblenz, a city several millennia in the making at the special junction of the Mosel and Rhine rivers. Next to the Rathaus in the city’s Altstadt, stands are up with the usual array of food, drink, and a variety of wares to look and buy, including illuminated Christmas stars. Time I find me some Glühwein

Thanks to Koblenz Touristik for access to Forum Confluentes and the Romanticum, and to Romantic Germany for their support in various cities along the Rhine river. I made the photo on 25 November 2015 with the Canon EOS6D, 24-105 zoom, and settings: 1/200-sec, f/4, ISO1600, and 58mm focal length. Leipziger Weihnachtsmarkt – Leipzig Christmas Market

After tracing the likes of The Peaceful Revolution, Martin Luther, Bach, and Mendelssohn in Leipzig, the sparkle of bright lights and the promise of mulled wine beckon. Emerging from the Markt S-Bahn train station, the sounds of the underground give way to the din of crowds. The city’s central Marktplatz (Market Square) is home to the Leipziger Weihnachtsmarkt (Leipzig Christmas Market) and people are out en masse despite the cold bite in the evening air.

Fotoeins Friday: Hark, the herald angel lights in Praha

One thing about which I’m particularly attracted at Christmas Markets are the lights. Having frequented the Czech capital city of Prague, the surprise is entirely mine when sparkly angels of light appear in time for the city’s Christmas markets. This angel in the northwest corner of Old Town Square points to the towering spires of the Church of Our Lady before Týn. At the foot of the church are the Jan Hus memorial statue and the ever-present and illuminated Christmas tree.

Fotoeins Friday: Christmas rush aesthetic, Leipzig Hbf

Inspired by a similar photograph in a hotel room, I’m at Willy-Brandt-Platz at the bus- and tram-stop in front of the Westhalle at Leipzig Hauptbahnhof (Central Station). I’m deliberate in experimenting with photographs made over a variation in settings. What I like is the tram moving into the frame from the left, the light stripes parallel to the lines of the building in the background, and leading to the waiting crowds at the right. And the Christmas consumer streak continues …

Thanks to Leipzig Tourismus und Marketing GmbH (LTM) and InterCityHotel Leipzig for their kind hospitality. Access to public transport was kindly provided by LTM and the MDV Mitteldeutscher Verkehrsverbund regional transport authority.
