Seasons: autumn

For me, autumn or fall represents a change for deciduous trees, bringing about deep reds, oranges, and yellows for a brief period before the leaves fall, and signifying the ultimate transition to winter. In languages with which I’m most familiar, the word “autumn” (or fall) appears as:

  • Chinese: 秋季
  • French: l’automne
  • German: der Herbst
  • Spanish: el otoño

ONE

For this beach in northern Germany, the end of high season means vacationers have gone, and the Strandkörbe (literally, “beach baskets”) are empty, yawning towards the open sea. This is also where the Trave river meets the Baltic Sea, providing the town with its name Travemünde (“Trave mouth”).

TWO

One beautiful benefit of having been able to visit Prague in all four seasons is getting to see the colour change in the trees on Petřín hill. With an obligatory crossing of the Charles Bridge, the rich colour from the leaves blend easily with the golden light of an autumn sunrise.

THREE

A stroll through east Berlin’s Treptow might take me through areas typically for residents and other Berliners, but that’s the entire point of the exercise. And by the time I approach Treptower Park to the east, the tree-lined street reveals “that tower again” when I look back from where I started.

FOUR

Near the ski area above the city of Santa Fe, brilliant golden yellows have swept through the aspen trees in the Santa Fe National Forest. We’re told we’re in time for peak colours which also don’t last for very long. It’s a good thing we arrived in town the day before, and this is how we begin our two weeks in the American Southwest.

      Hi and thanks, Tina. I agree with you about the aspens: I was completely mesmerized by the sweep of golden aspens hugging the mountains in the Santa Fe Forest. Now that I think about it, I’d like to have another opportunity to see them again. 😉 Thanks for your comment!

      Hi, Amy. With our aim to see the balloon fiesta in Albuquerque, we decided to fly into Santa Fe, and we were fortunate to arrive in town for peak colors in the National Forest. I’ve got big desires to return to this part of New Mexico in early- to mid-autumn 🍁🍂 Thanks for your kind comment!

      Hi and thanks, Geri. Over time, a person can collect a wide variety of pictures across all seasons in all sorts of different places. I feel very lucky to have visited Prague in all four seasons, but it’s autumn that is one of my favourites, for the very scene you pointed out: Petrin hill and Kampa Island.
