My Tirol: day trips from Innsbruck
As one of nine states within the federal republic of Austria, Tirol is well known not only for all-season access to the Alps, but also for a variety of other attractions.
With transport authorities IVB Innsbruck, VVT Tirol, and ÖBB Austria, Tirol state capital Innsbruck was the base from which I travelled to Alpbach (half-day), Brenner (half-day), Hall in Tirol (half-day), Nordkette (half-day), Scharnitz (half-day), Stubaital (half-day), and Wilder Kaiser (full day).
Day trips
For each location, I list the “why” (you should visit) and the “how” (you can get there from Innsbruck). I had specific goals, including a search for a Nobel Prize laureate, visit with friends, and expansion of a long-term photography project.
1. Alpbach
Why: “Austria’s most beautiful village”, “Europe’s Most Beautiful Flower Village”.
How: S-Bahn or regional train to Brixlegg, then bus 4074 to Alpbach.

2. Brenner
Why: pre-Roman trade route, historical ties at the border between Austria’s Tirol and Italy’s South Tyrol.
How: S-Bahn or regional train to Brenner.

3. Hall in Tirol
Why: in 1486 the silver coin ‘Taler’ (Thaler) was minted; derived from this is the modern ‘dollar’.
How: S-Bahn or regional train, or bus 501, 503, 504.
Key: Hall-Wattens Tourism
Hasegg Castle where Hall’s Mint Museum resides (X70).
West from Oberer Stadtplatz: left-to-right Josefskirche, Stadtamt, Lampe Reisen, Bäcker Reutz (X70).
4. Nordkette
Why: commanding view of Innsbruck, Inn valley, Sill valley, and beyond, from Hafekelar at 2260 metres (7420 feet).
How: Hungerberg funicular and Nordkette cable car, or entirely on foot.
Key: Nordkette.
South from Hafelekar: Innsbruck and Inn river; at centre, Sill valley and beyond to Italy (6D1).
North from Hafelekar: Nordkette mountains in the Karwendel, Northern Limestone Alps (6D1).
5. Scharnitz
Why: dramatic landscapes through the Seefeld region, and access to Germany’s Mittenwald and Garmisch-Partenkirchen.
How: S-Bahn or regional train to Scharnitz.
Key: Seefeld region.

New versus old: Scharnitz bypass, Isar river, ruins of mid-17th century fortification Porta Claudia (6D1).
6. Stubaital
Why: a quiet slice of life in an Alpine valley.
How: red STB tram to Fulpmes; bus 590 to Neustift and beyond.

7. Wilder Kaiser
Why: ice cream in Going, hiking, lakes, meadows, and a big beer in Scheffau.
How: S-Bahn or regional train to St. Johann; bus 4060 to Going, Ellmau, Scheffau.

Nice. I will visit this area soon. We did 4 days in the Italian Dolomites, and we really enjoyed it.

Amazing scenery Henry. We are planning another European adventure next year which will include Austria. Can’t wait to visit this beautiful country. 🙂

Thanks, Sylvia. I’m very glad to have had a beautiful warm May morning in Alpbach. Like all new discoveries, they’re an introduction for more, and Alpbach is no different. In the future, I’d like to spend at least a couple of days in the Alpbachtal during the green season.

Henry, on a warm September afternoon like today, the Apfelstrudel ice cream sounds delightful! Since my parents’ home is really not so far from Innsbruck, I’ll have to pass along these day trip ideas. I love the quintessential image of the dachshund and his master, too. 🙂

Hi, Tricia. I have my friends to thank for bringing me to delicious local small-batch ice cream. I would’ve liked to have parked myself longer in Going am Wilden Kaiser to try more of their flavours! In Alpbach, I’m fairly certain the dachshund knows who’s boss. 😄
