Ich hab’ früher meine österreichische Reise erklärt. Diesen Monat führ’ ich eine informelle Umfrage durch diese 3. Frage:

I described my upcoming time in Austria in a previous post. While in country, I’ll carry out an informal poll:
- How many Austrians know or have seen “The Sound of Music”?
- What do they think about the movie?
- What do they think about how some North Americans believe the film represents in part Austria?
The 4 lists above describe places and sights to which I’m looking forward to visiting, all made easier with a Eurail 2-country pass.

Being born and growing up in Germany which is neighbor of Austria, I have never heard of that movie, when I came over to the US, I saw it for the first time.

What did you think when you saw the movie the first time? What do you think about how many in North America get their first impressions of Austria from this movie?

American friends who visit Austria, their only or first travel goal is visiting the place where the movie was made. Really interesting. It’s a classic movie, beautifully done, yet to my culture I felt that it was a bit to much kitsch in it and a bit too much of adoration, hey no judgment from my side, just an observation as an European. Don’t mean to hurt anybodies feelings.

In school, nuns taught us to sing a couple of the songs from the movie. Even way back then, I had to know the answers to two questions: (1) what does an edelweiss look like? (2) what and where are those mountains? Although the movie isn’t in any of my top or favourite lists, it definitely left an impression. And maybe, even way back then, I was crushin’ large on the actress who played Liesl: maybe, I still do. 😉

Although your schedule seems quite tough, I dare to recommend the following place near Innsbruck: “Museum der Völker” at the old town of Schwaz comprising a large, interesting ethnographic collection Well not typically Austrian indeed, but at least good to know.

Thank you for your comment and for your recommendation; I’ve added it to my “Innsbruck” list. I typically plan what appears as “punishing schedules”, but I always have too much which I can “weed” as need be. The museum in Schwaz reminds me a little bit of the Museum of Anthropology (MOA, at UBC) here in Vancouver. The MOA focus is on local First Nations people, but the museum contains an interesting diverse collection of cultures from around the world.

The museum in Schwaz goes back to a private collection (not a state-run matter), we found it by coincidence a few years ago and is worth a visit really. But you can also visit an old silver mine there or nearby optionally. We usually are most up in the mountains for Sommerfrische when in Austria!
