My Heidelberg: Herakut street art for Metropolink
It’s amazing what gets discovered after going the wrong way.
I head straight for a full city-block before realizing my error, that I should’ve turned right about 5 minutes ago. I bow my head, and release a deep breath in frustration. I raise my head to the sky, when I catch sight of something out of the corner of my eye.
What’s that across the street?
I have to reach my destination which I know isn’t far.
But I am coming back here to get the shot.
Herakuts Wandkunst, HD-Südstadt
As part of the Metropolink urban art festival in the summer of 2016, the artist duo herakut was invited to create a wall mural in Heidelberg. As this beautiful work also highlights, their message has consistently been about challenging our preconceptions and assumptions. For more about the making, Montana Cans writes about this work here.
“Wenn wir uns von Äusserlichkeiten abschrecken lassen, verpassen wir womöglich das Wertvolle darunter.”
(If we let outer appearances scare us, we might miss out on great beauty inside.)
The United Nations has assigned March 21 as the International Day for the Elimination of all Forms of Racial Discrimination. The European Action Week Against Racism in 2017 takes place 18 to 26 March.
I previously wrote about herakut’s art on a visit to Lutherstadt Wittenberg.
I made the photos above on 15 March 2017 with a Canon EOS6D mark1. This post appears on Fotoeins Fotografie at fotoeins DOT com as http://wp.me/p1BIdT-9tN.

I absolutely agree with your saying. You discovered a treasure that way.

I stood open-mouthed, because I couldn’t believe my bad luck had immediately turned into a stroke of great fortune. I recognized the style of art work (from my visit to Wittenberg), and I knew immediately who created the art. After arriving at my intended destination, I came back to this art piece an hour later to photograph. Thanks for your comment, Cornelia!

What a beautiful piece with a great message. I love that you accidentally found it, but really I think you were meant to find it:)

Thank you, Cathy, for reading and for your comment. I like that I was meant to find this piece in Heidelberg, especially because I consider Heidelberg a “hometown” and because the first time I saw Herakut’s work in another city was also by complete accident. In Wittenberg, I’m in a taxi from the train station to my hotel. The taxi goes up the street when I catch sight of a wall mural under afternoon illumination. I took note of the subsequent turns by the taxi, and I retraced my steps on my foot the following day. I highlighted Herakut’s “Patience and hope” here.

I really love the close-ups, it helps you appreciate all the amazing detail! Street art has always been a great way to communicate, I think – and the message in this one is for the ages. Glad you shared it in the chat!
