Fotoeins Friday : “Guckenspiel”, Munich Marienplatz
Why look at the Glockenspiel when I can look at the people staring at the very same Glockenspiel? Munich is something of an old hat: comfortable, familiar, and a cut of the Bavarian blue-and-white-diamond cloth. And so here I am in the Bavarian capital on a beautiful late-autumn afternoon, and the crowds have gathered once again for the daily noon ritual at Marienplatz. I stand back and watch the people look up, waaaay up …

😁 Hi, Cornelia. I’m big on book stores; one of my favourites is in Berlin: Dussmann, near Bahnhof Friedrichstrasse. Every time I’m in Munich and I’m passing through Marienplatz, I try to stop inside Hugendubel. How long did you work at Hugendubel?

I worked in different locations of Hugendubel, I started my apprantance ship ( Lehrling) in 1969, I probably worked there for about 15 years.I used to be manager in different departments. Later on I worked at Kaiser Buchhandlung which used to be across Hugendubel am Marienplatz. Back than being a book seller was a real profession, where one had to attend a professional education for 3 years.

That’s some great history, Cornelia. Thanks for telling me a bit of your story, and I’m glad a relatively simple yet very familiar image could evoke great memories for you. I also remember that being a bookseller was once more popular; it is still an honorable profession today. 🙂

Funny, I was 4 days after you took these photos in munich too … just to visit some museums and so on. So we missed eachother just in a short time. 😉 But often there are so many people as well… 🙂 Excuse my bad english if I am writing something wrong! 😉

Das ist echt kein Problem; wir können gut auf Denglisch. 🙂 That’s hilarious that you were in Munich a mere 4 days after I made these shots. A lot happens in a year, and it puts my head into a spin at how I was in Munich (again) only one year ago. But I am in Germany a lot (at least once every year), so that helps to explain some of it. Sometime soon it would be great to meet over coffee to talk photography! Dann machen wir auch Fotos auf Denglisch. 🙂
