Fotoeins Friday: Handmade wares at Munich’s Schwabing Christmas Market
Outside of Munich’s city centre crowds diminish and it’s no different around Münchner Freiheit. When I’m in town meeting friends, the area is complete with cafés, pubs, bistros, and restaurants. The square is also home to the neighbourhood’s Christmas market, which for area residents is a relaxed and quieter alternative. Various stalls ply food, drink, and handcrafted items of various shapes and sizes.
With MVV public transport, the Schwabing Christmas market at Münchner Freiheit is accessible with the U3 or U6 subway (underground) lines in about 15 to 20 minutes from the city centre to station Münchner Freiheit. Eichenau and Pasing are respectively 25 and 12 km west of Munich’s city centre, each accessible with S-Bahn trains.

Oh, I know that one back from the days when I still lived in Munich, thank you for sharing. As I am reading every word on that booth, Pasing is the place where I was baptized and lived for a few years…. and Eichenau I remember that it was some kind of women prison…..

There are a tremendous number of posts about on the Christmas markets in Germany. But which one (Christmas market) is the best for a non local?

For a first-timer, any Christmas market allows a glimpse into the traditions for both liquour (wine) and food; arguably, the “best” market is one where residents go, wherever the visitor may be. Unfortunately, the “best” descriptor tends to be entirely qualitative, especially if the visitor does not like big busy crowds. Thanks for your question, Ardjette!

Having lived there for a few years. I would highly recommend the Mittelalt markt (very near Odeonsplatz) and the Tollwod one, at Theresienstr. There is a lot of charm in the one at the park, at Chinesicherturm, particularly when it snows, but the food is better at the other two.

Hi, Eva, and thank you very much for your reply. It’s a failing on my part, not to have asked you or Jen for your impressions of the Christmas markets in Munich. Although I was in Munich this trip, people were setting up stalls in the various “Plätze” and the markets weren’t open by the time I left the city. Thanks again for your recommendations in Munich!
