Leipziger Weihnachtsmarkt – Leipzig Christmas Market
After tracing the likes of The Peaceful Revolution, Martin Luther, Bach, and Mendelssohn in Leipzig, the sparkle of bright lights and the promise of mulled wine beckon. Emerging from the Markt S-Bahn train station, the sounds of the underground give way to the din of crowds. The city’s central Marktplatz (Market Square) is home to the Leipziger Weihnachtsmarkt (Leipzig Christmas Market) and people are out en masse despite the cold bite in the evening air.

Ah, beautiful, makes me home sick. I never got back to you about recommendations about my home town Munich. I assume that you already know a lot about it, since you have been there. One MUST is the Viktualien Markt, right next to Marienplatz, there is a little cozy Café, called something like with Hut in the name, they serve most delicious ” Auszogne”….have a hot soup in der Suppenkueche in the middle of the Viktualien Markt….. if the weather is nice, go climb up the stairs of St.Peter’s Tower which is right next to the Market, it will give you an incredible view over the Old City, as the Frauen Kirche mit den Zwiebel Tuermen, you can go up by an elevator……der Englische Garten is most beautiful for a stroll…..Munich has incredible museums….and of the Christkindl Markt, not to miss….if you like churches, there is the Theatiner Kirche in der Theatiner Strasse and one of the oldest churches the Asam Kirche in Sendlinger Strasse, typical Bavarian restaurants are, Der Donisl…. Bratwurstgloeckl….. Franziskaner…..Das weisse Braeuhaus…..etc, they all within the same walking distance…. a peaceful place to rest your tired feet is Der Hofgarten only is the weather is nice….if you like to take a little day trip outside of Munich hop on the S-Bahn und go to Tutzing am Starnberger See oder Herrschin am Ammersee just beautiful there…….for now that’s what comes to mind, please let me know if you have more questions. Wow! Danke für Deine Empfehlungen! 🙂 I’ve already stopped through Munich, and while two things I did were “repeats”, I hadn’t done them in over 10 years. I went back up to the top of Peterskirche for an inexpensive view (and a few more photographs). I also returned to the Deutsches Museum and went up to the Sonnenuhrgarten on the roof, in time for sunset. I also passed by the Stadtmuseum and the Synagoge, the latter of which was beautifully illuminated in early-afternoon light. There was only so much in a couple of days as a short-stop, but it was good to be back in Munich, even for a short time before the start of the Christmas markets. Danke, Cornelia! In truth, that Monday was my only full day in München, which meant I skirted around the Stadtmuseum and Synagoge (on a bright day), but I went to the Deutsches Museum, because frankly, that place is so massive it almost must open on Mondays. 😉

I’ve put up a couple of photos from the Deutsches Museum on Instagram. As I write, I am in the 11th of 13 cities for the present trip, and to this point, I’ve made over 5100 photos. Thanks! Yes, it’s a big truckload to select/curate and edit; moreover, the proper selection for stories/posts is also a process with which I like to take some time.

Looks so lovely. Today the christmas market in my hometown opened but I wont go there till December (it doesnt feel for me very much like Christmas till it is December…)

Timo, I know it’s been unusually warm of late, but the recent change in weather and temperature has felt more winter-like, coinciding with the start of Christmas markets throughout the country. But I understand very well the idea and motivation of going to the Christmas markets when it’s cold!

In order to drink some Glühwein I really need lower temperatures and in best case also snow falling / covering the ground 🙂

Oh, I love the German Christmas markets (mostly for the sausages and glühwein)! Haven’t been to Leipzig, but it’s definitely on the list thanks to your great photos.

Hi, Cathy. There’s nothing wrong with the “staple” of Bratwurst and Glühwein, because that’s my usual m.o. with Christmas markets, too. I would recommend that if you can swing the time, visit both Leipzig and Dresden to compare and contrast their Christmas markets, especially because it’s relatively easy to bridge the distance between both cities.
