Fotoeins Friday: Hamburg Speicherstadt, new UNESCO WHS
Earlier this week (5 July), the UNESCO World Heritage Committee awarded both Speicherstadt (Warehouse district) and the Kontorhausviertel (Commerical office district) UNESCO World Heritage Site status in the north German city of Hamburg. The above photo is in the middle of the Speicherstadt with a northeast view of the Zollkanal from Kibbelsteg towards Jungfernbrücke. Under late-winter afternoon light, the ever-present brick is cast in a warm red-orange glow.
I made the photo above on 8 March 2010 with the Canon 450D camera, the EF-S 18-55 f/3.5-5.6 IS kit- and zoom-lens, and the following settings: 1/640s, f/8, ISO400, 18mm focal length (29mm full-frame equivalent). This post appears on Fotoeins Fotopress at fotoeins.com as http://wp.me/p1BIdT-6Yr.

Hi and thanks, Nancie! I agree with you, but sometimes I can’t help but wonder if some approach the UNESCO list like some kind of sport, with little regard for cultural and historical importance. How many UNESCO WHS have you visited in South Korea? 🙂

Sadly Saxony didnt work out due to the tight schedule of my mother-in-law and because we have 2 bunnies at home and didnt find anyone to take care of them for 3 days…

We did but we also only stayed there shortly. Some time in the shopping street, checking out the townhall, the churches and the landungsbrücken 🙂

That’s a well-deserved designation, I think. I loved Hamburg and the Warehouse District. I enjoyed walking around there and visiting Miniatur Wunderland.

Funny thing is I’ve heard plenty of the Miniature Wonderland, but I still have not yet visited. 😦 But in keeping with past centuries of trading through northern European ports, I visited the Spice Museum instead, and it helped I was accompanied by a local resident who is big on cooking. I agree with you: I’m also very pleased both the Warehouse District and the Office District are now part of the Hamburg listing for UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
