Fotoeins Friday: fine art in Leipzig’s glass cube
In 2014, Leipzig’s Museum of Fine Arts (Museum der bildenden Künste) celebrated their 10th anniversary at its present location of Katharinenstrasse and Brühl. The photo above shows how much outside light enters the enclosed glass cube and seating area for the museum café run by Michaelis.
Leipzig Tourism describes the museum as:
The Leipzig Museum of Fine Arts was founded around 1858. The 36-metre-high cube designed by Berlin architects Hufnagel/Pütz/Rafaelian towers above the surrounding buildings and is extensively covered with 4.5-metre-tall narrow vertical cast glass panels. The principle of the interior is based on alternating open and enclosed cubes of space in various layers. The courtyards and terraces which open the museum to the city can be seen from the outside, and reflect the idea of Leipzig’s passageways.
I made the photo on 2 December 2014 with the Canon 6D, 24-105 zoom-lens, and the following settings: 1/60s, f/8, ISO3200, 24mm focal length. Thanks to Leipzig Tourismus und Marketing GmbH (LTM) and InterCityHotel Leipzig for their hospitality during my visit (2-4 December 2014). Though I lived for a few years in Chemnitz and visited often Leipzig I had no idea that this building is even exisiting!
This picture is really great as at it seems kind of surreal to me, more like a collage at first glance

Hi, Timo. I’m curious about Chemnitz: what should I see and/or experience in Chemnitz? The MDBK in Leipzig is a wonderful sight; in my opinion, the building from the outside is itself like a piece of art, nd the view immediately upon entering is magnificent. The building is relatively young at 10 years old; perhaps, the MDBK is one of many reasons you and your family should visit Leipzig. 🙂 Thanks again for reading and for your comment!

The problem in Hcmenitz is that too much changed in the city. Not much old structure is left over. Within the city center there is a small part of the old town left, which is surrounded by new big malls. There you can also find the “red tower/ roter turm” which is the last part of the old city wall.
Outside the city is at least one old castle (looks more like a tower to me) but I don’t remember the name. To be honest, I don’t remember too much of Chemnitz anymore. Oh, in the city you find also the statue/ head of Karl-Marx which is actually also one of the sights there 🙂

That’s okay, Timo – it’s a start. I know Chemnitz was renamed Karl-Marx-Stadt during the DDR, and re-renamed Chemnitz after reunification. Perhaps, in the future, I’ll ask you about northern Germany. 🙂

I believe I will be able to tell you more about north Germany than about Chemnitz. I lived in that city for two years until my high school degree. Back then I cared little about sights to visit however Northern Germany (Schleswig-Holstein) is my hood 🙂

Fantastisch! Ich bin immer neugierig auf Schleswig-Holstein, die Nordseeküste, und die Ostseeküste. Ich hab “leider” nur Lübeck und Travemünde besucht 🙂

Ich wohne in Neumünster, im Herzen von Schleswig-Holstein. Von dort kann man alles recht schnel besuchen. Flensburg ist schön, Sylt, die Halligen und einige spezielle Dinge wie das Wikinger Dorf bei Schleswig 🙂
