Fotoeins Friday: summer solstice sunset silhouette
On a beautiful warm sunny day on Canada’s West Coast, the first day of summer feels like the everybody in Vancouver shows up in parks and beaches. There are countless numbers of bicyclists; rollerbladers; people walking the Seawall; families, children giggling away, babies in strollers; people walking their dogs, and people on the beach to get their tan on. I’m glad my friend, Megan, was with me to watch this magnificent sunset.

Summer solstice is a big event in Scandinavian countries. In Finland for example you have huge bonfires and Midsummer is a national holiday, actually the biggest holiday for most Finnish people.
Sadly during the summer solstice I was in south Finland so I could not take any pictures depicting how bright everything is but here with my poor phone cam I managed this around 1am https://twitter.com/CraChineseFam/status/480469485888221184/photo/1
Just 400km more north, were my parents are atm in their cottage it was much more bright during that time and I don’t even want to know how it is above the arctic circle

Hi! I’d always known summer is a big deal in Scandinavia, in a way that’s likely similar to the communities in the Canadian Arctic. It wasn’t until I visited Stockholm and København over summer solstice when I began to understood just how important summer is. I barely slept while I was in that part of the world for a couple of weeks, what with few hours of ‘true” nighttime darkness. Not that I was complaining. 🙂 Thanks for stopping by and for your comment!

The downside to it are the very long darkness during winter time. It is just depressing having just a few hours of day light in winter time even the more so if there is no snow
