Vancouver Christmas Market: Opening Weekend (2013)

Love & Strategy at the Weihnachtsmarkt

With my Germanophile or Teutonophile status extending to embrace all that is the Christmas market (Weihnachtsmarkt), here are reasons why I love these markets:

  • Hang out with friends.
  • Scope out the food stalls.
  • Drink Glühwein, round 1.
  • Consume food, round 1: Bratwurst, Kartoffelpuffer, Flammkuchen, Schnitzel, etc. Standing in my way are Brezeln, soup, Schweinehaxen, or cookies and cakes.
  • Drink Glühwein, round 2.
  • Consume food, round 2: preferably something different from round 1.
  • Gawk at all of the things I could buy but won’t, although I’m thinking about getting that Rotes Sternchen (little red star) for the family tree …

I have a minimum number of two Glühwein per visit, but it happens my drink maximum is also at two. At three, my head spins up into the stratosphere, while the rest of my body sinks down to fall-down hilarity.

But I’ve kept my skull intact long enough to make these snaps on opening weekend to Vancouver’s Christmas Market in downtown Vancouver. It’s a pleasant surprise to hear and speak German with various volunteers and employees working the booths and stands at the Vancouver Christmas market.

Eat, drink, and be merry: wir feiern Weihnachtsmarkt!

The Vancouver Christmas Market was at Queen Elizabeth Plaza, but the 2016 edition will expand into a new and larger location at Jack Poole Plaza (Olympic Cauldron) next to Vancouver Convention Centre West.

I made these Instagrams mostly during the market’s opening weekend, 22-23 November 2013. This post appears on Fotoeins Fotopress at fotoeins.com as http://wp.me/p1BIdT-42r.

I love Christmas markets…This tradition is pretty strong in Czech Republic (German influence…) and when I lived in Prague I used to have a cup of mulled wine every day on the way back from the university (don’t judge me, it’s Christmas time). The atmosphere was fantastic! I loved in also in smaller cities when it’s way less touristy…Thanks for sharing, it brought me back beautiful memories!

Hi! I love the Christmas markets, too! And my, I loved being in Prague for their markets two years ago. I love Praha as it is, but combined with the cold crisp air, snow on the ground, all those lights, they all combine to make some great atmosphere, even at Wenceslas Square through to Old Town Square and on over to Mala Strana! 🙂 Now, I want to be back in Prague again for their markets! Thanks for reading and for your comment!

Hi! All the Weihnachtsmärkte in Germany should be in full swing by this weekend. I really loved the Frankfurt markets; I still have a bunch of photos from visits over the last couple of years. The crowds at Römer are just nuts! But all in all, it’s a great atmosphere from the river Main all the way up to the Zeil! 🙂 Thanks for reading and for your comment!

Hi! Thank you for chatting with me online and for your kind retweets. I know I’m hungry just thinking about all the great food the Christmas market has on offer. The food and drink alone are great reminders of my “adopted home” that is the Deutschland. 🙂 Thanks again for reading and for your comment!

I am a huge fan of Christmas markets and will be making my way back to Europe soon — Budapest, Bratislava, and Prague. The German markets are amazing and I might be able to get to one this year, but not sure. Looks like Vancouver does a great job with their market. And how fun that you were enjoying it with Christina!

Hi, Cathy. Oh how I wish I were back in Europe every December! When will you be in Budapest, Bratislava, and Praha? It sounds like you might not be in Europe in time for their Christmas markets. 2013 marks the 4th consecutive year running for the Vancouver market, and my hometown is doing a great job in providing elements of German/European authenticity. Christina was passing through on her way to Seattle, and she wanted to visit the Market; we both got to speak German to a few people at the market, too! Thanks for stopping by and for your kind comment!
